Petrol over 15 years, diesel over 10 years? You can’t refuel anymore in Delhi.
What’s Changing from July 1?
The Delhi government, under the directive of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), has initiated a major crackdown on vehicular pollution. From July 1, 2025, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years will no longer be allowed to refuel at any petrol or diesel station in the city.
This rule is part of the ongoing enforcement of End-of-Life Vehicle (EOLV) regulations and aims to reduce toxic emissions by preventing outdated, high-polluting vehicles from operating on Delhi’s roads.
How Will It Be Enforced?
According to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued to petrol pumps across Delhi, fuel outlets are now required to:
- Deny petrol or diesel to any vehicle exceeding its age limit.
- Maintain a log of all denied fuel transactions.
- Use AI-enabled Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to identify non-compliant vehicles.
CNG vehicles are exempt from this ban and will continue to be refuelled as usual.
What Happens If You Violate the Rule?
- Four-wheeler violators will face a fine of ₹10,000.
- Two-wheeler owners will be fined ₹5,000.
- Vehicles found parked near fuel stations or in public places can be seized.
These penalties will be enforced by traffic and municipal authorities starting immediately, with real-time flagging of EOL vehicles through ANPR systems at all major fuel stations.
Why This Matters
Delhi consistently ranks among the most polluted cities globally. The move to deny fuel to ageing, emission-heavy vehicles is a firm step toward achieving cleaner air quality. According to environmental experts, such direct action could significantly reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM2.5) levels over time.
What Should Vehicle Owners Do?
If your vehicle is nearing the end of its legally permitted lifespan in Delhi:
- Check your registration details on the Parivahan portal.
- Consider de-registering or scrapping the vehicle at a certified centre.
- Explore retrofitment with electric kits where permitted (pending notification).
Owners can also download the “Vehicle Scrappage Policy” PDF from the Ministry of Road Transport for additional guidance.
With this new measure, Delhi is making a bold move to combat vehicular emissions. Though it brings challenges for some vehicle owners, it also opens doors to cleaner mobility and greener alternatives. The message is clear—Delhi’s roads must move toward a sustainable future.
